Bharathiar University was established in 1982 by the Government of Tamilnadu at Coimbatore under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981. In May, 1985 the University received the recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and got re–accredited with A Grade by NAAC and placed among the top ten universities at the national level.
The School of Distance Education of Bharathiar University was founded during the academic year 1991-92 realizing the objective of strengthening its base to provide quality education. The school has started extending its action by identifying and approving study centres throughout the country and abroad to help achieve higher gross enrolment ratio and high literacy rate

ASIC is an independent United Kingdom body which provides a totally independent, rigorous and transparent accreditation service for independent schools, colleges, Universities, training centres, vocational colleges and providers of distance/ online learning in the UK and worldwide. ASIC is an approved accrediting body for the purposes of compliance by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) relating to the admission of students holding Student Visitor Visas and to the delivery of programs in ESOL with Citizenship, is a member of the British Quality Foundation (BQF), sits on the Quality Standards Group of UK NARIC, and is listed in the international registry for the UK of CHEA, the USA Council for Higher Education Accreditation, and is a national UK Affiliate of ENQA, the European Network of Quality Assurance for Higher Education, which recognizes ASIC as a bona fide quality assurance agency and is a member of the CHEA International Quality Group (CIQG).
